Dance & Tai Chi
Maria comes to BeWell with 50(!) years of teaching experience. She has extensive training in ballet, modern dance and ethnic dance. She has years of training and practice in Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Yoga, Creative and Expressive Art Therapy, mask making
and healing ritual. Her early training was with Stone and Cameryn Ballet and Helga
Schultz Modern Dance Co. in Chicago as well as summers at Interlochen Michigan as a
dance student and then assistant in the art department. In 1968 she became a member
of Le Groupe de la Place Royale one of the first modern dance co. in Canada and eventually became artistic director of Formolo Dance Association in Alberta. After 33 years in Canada as a professional performer, choreographer, workshop leader and
creative innovator, she returned to the Upper Peninsula where she was born to be
assistant builder to her 90 year young dad.
Other major influences are 10 years with Mamawe a Native American performance
event in the foothills of Alberta, Maestro Petre Bodeutz a Romanian choreographer, and
her work with theater companies in Montreal and Edmonton and influences from her
performance tours and residencies in Japan, China, New Zealand, Cyprus, Bali,
Venezuela and the Canadian far North by bush plane, and many seasons of cross
Maria co-created the NMU Dance Minor. At present she teaches Yoga and Tai Chi through NMU and local Senior Centers and works creatively with many artists of all disciplines as a performance artist. She has been a regular contributor to a variety of Marquette performance events and festivals.
